eBOOKS IN 2023

Digital book sales, for the most part, continues to decline in sales month by month. Revenues were down 2.7% globally throughout 2022 (AAP report Sept 2022). Year-to-date eBook revenues were down 6.3% as compared to the first nine months of 2021.

 

Digital audiobook sales continue to be the fastest growing segment in digital publishing. However, this should not deter authors from still publishing an eBook version of their book, along with a print and audio version. For starters, having all three platforms available helps in credibility and in perception that the author is more than just vanity or self-published. It shows a commitment to take their craft and published work seriously. However, we can't ignore the monopoly Amazon have over the online selling world when it comes to books. Yes, Amazon's KDP does have unique marketing tools for your eBook once published and we often focus our authors purely to KDP to maximise these promotional tools prior to listing their eBook on other websites. So, with that in mind, we offer two options in the distribution of your eBook so keep reading.

Creation of your epub or Mobi file.


Many think the PDF of your published book suffices as an eBook. Not the case. when looking at multiple platforms and sources of distribution, we need to produce a robust file that can be user-friendly and adaptable to different readers. Hence the creation of an epub, or if specifically focusing on Amazon's KDP and heavy with images, a MOBI file. Once the file is created, we check and validate the file to ensure it has no coding errors and is ready for distribution.

Distribution of your eBook (Amazon exclusive).

Whether through exclusively Amazon's KDP or onto multiple channels of sale, we take care of the meta data entry for your eBook. This process can be confusing and annoying if you are not familiar with the process, and it is important that it is done correctly as meta data descriptions are vital for search engines. Once ready, ORP will create your KDP account, upload the cover and file, input the meta data and ensure the listing goes live. Once done, we submit step-by-step guidance on utilising the tools on KDP to ensure you are maximising your time on Amazon.

Distribution of your eBook (multiple channels).

If you optin for the multiple channel option, then we take care of creating your central distribution account, meta data entry (as above) along with ensuring the eBook is live and available on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Vivilo, Hoopla, Kobo, Tolino, Smashwords, OverDrive, Bibliotheca, Scribd, Baker & Taylor, and BorrowBox. Once done and live, we give exclusive access to your distribution account where you can explore additional promotional tools to market your eBook.

All Yours

Any books sold through either the Amazon KDP option or the multiple channel option, ORP does not collect any royalty or commission from. With KDP, there are royalty options of either 35% or 70% depending on pricing and options chosen. The simplest way of explaining this is if you price your eBook between $0.99c and $11.99USD you are most likely to be in the 70% royalty bracket. Read more HERE. Amazon KDP pay monthly directly into your bank account once the payment threshold amount has been reached - approx. $25USD.

If selecting the multiple channel option, 60% royalties is paid to you directly into either your PayPal or bank account, again when the threshold has been met - $25USD - and again monthly.

Pricing your eBook is relatively easy. The general rule if that it is a third to a quarter of your physical book. So, for example, if you are selling your print version at $29.95 then the eBook should be between $6.99 - $9.99. Incidentally, when thinking audio, it should be half - $14.99.
